“Did you see it?”
“Sweetie, I promise there’s nothing in there. Now go back to sleep.”
Sarah took one last glance towards the closet before watching her mother get up from the bed. “Can you leave the light on?”
“If I do that then we both know you’ll never fall asleep.”
Sarah watched helplessly from the bed as her mother reached for the light switch. “Goodnight, Sarah. I love you.”
“Love you, too…” Sarah whimpered as the door closed behind her mother. The child’s room was now completely engulfed in darkness. She immediately buried herself beneath her covers. It was her only form of protection.
“You shouldn’t have done that.” A voice whispered from across the room.
Sarah cautiously brought her head out from underneath the covers. As she opened her eyes she was immediately met with the sight of a pair of sickly, yellow eyes staring back at her from the closet. “Wh-what do you want?” she trembled.
“You.” The closet door creaked open. Sarah clamped her eyes shut. The large figure slowly crept into the room and towards Sarah’s bed.
He crawled onto the bed and hovered over her. “Open your eyes.”
She shook her head furiously.
“I said open them” he spat into her ear.
She forced her eyes open. She whimpered at the sight above her. Those sickly, yellow eyes continued to glare back at her. His jaw had somehow become unhinged, revealing his long, pointed tongue and his carefully sharpened teeth. His skin was slowly beginning to decay and the smell of it overwhelmed Sarah’s senses. He smirked as he brought a bony, skinless finger to his dry lips.
“Don’t scream.”
